Equipment
Motorsport Rescue Units in the UK operate under the auspices of the FIA and MSA. The mechanical & medical equipment that we carry is prescribed by the regulatory body and published in the MSA Officials yearbook (the Red book).
To list the equipment carried on Phoenix would take an age and would not make very interesting reading. Suffice to say that we carry the equipment that a modern Fire & Rescue appliance has on board. We are not exempt from HSAW and PPE requirements and as such our crew all wear specialised safety equipment including Gallett helmets, two layer flame retardant overalls, flame retardant underwear and specialised protective gloves in addition to surgical gloves.
Many people ask why we have dedicated Motorsport rescue and extrication technicians when we have a Fire & Rescue Service in the UK. The answer is
simple. There is no comparison to the construction of a race vehicle and a domestic car. If we were to approach a rescue without knowledge of race-car construction we would at best be ineffectual and at worst dangerous. To be concise, we may share the same techniques as Fire-fighters and in most cases be taught by them, but we have specialist knowledge of Motorsport.
